Navigating Teen Mental Health: A Parent-Child Conversation with Humor and Heart
The unfiltered wisdom of teens takes center stage in this refreshingly honest conversation about youth mental health. When our teenage guests Kinsley and Faith join the podcast, they waste no time delivering hard truths about what young people actually need from the adults in their lives.
"Maybe not hound them so much about a couple of things on the floor of their room," Kinsley suggests when asked what adults can do better. This simple yet profound insight sets the tone for a discussion that peels back the layers of teen-adult communication barriers. Throughout the episode, our young guests highlight the disconnect between what adults think helps and what teens genuinely need: space when appropriate, genuine listening (not the "uh-huh" kind while scrolling on phones), and the security of knowing someone will respond immediately - even to texts sent at 12:50 AM.
The conversation introduces the powerful concept of an "emotional toolbox" - resources teens can access during difficult moments. From creative outlets like Kinsley's remarkable artistic talents to having a designated trusted adult, these tools provide crucial support systems. Victoria shares the touching practice of maintaining an "invisible string" with Kinsley, where intuitive understanding sometimes means simply showing up without being asked and sitting together during tough moments. This level of attunement creates the safety net teens need to navigate emotional challenges.
Our guests offer practical strategies any teen can implement: finding calming creative activities, playing games that redirect anxious thoughts, writing letters to yourself during difficult times, and remembering that hard moments don't last forever. Parents and caregivers will find invaluable insights into building trust with the teens in their lives, while young listeners will discover they're not alone in their experiences and that asking for help isn't weakness - it's wisdom. Speaker 1:She's kind of annoyed.
Speaker 2:And what we're going to do is when the podcast is over, if you can tell us approximately who and the amount of times somebody was called sunshine and who was called sunshine, and you either send it to us on facebook not she calls you sunshine, so who did she call? How many times tencel, okay, so don't call me since tencel and however many times she calls you sunshine, you either put it on our Facebook or do an email and we're going to give giveaways to whoever's closest, so Sunshine.
Speaker 1:And that one didn't count.
Speaker 2:Why doesn't it count?
Speaker 1:Because it's only from Tinsel.
Speaker 3:What'd you stop with the Tinsel?
Speaker 1:What's wrong with Tinsel Kiss?
Speaker 3:Kinsley.
Speaker 1:I messed up her name. Kinsley Youinsley. I messed up her name.
Speaker 3:Kinsley, you call me Tinsel you call me Sunshine.
Speaker 2:Well, no, she actually called you Sunshine, but yes, she called me a Sunshine, but Yep. Yes, she did. Yes, she did. Yep, I did. So we are talking about a very important matter and we want to talk about teens and tweens' mental health and how adults can do things to make things easier for our teens and tweens Good job.
Speaker 1:Faith.
Speaker 2:So what do you guys think that can be done to help others when it comes to making things easier for y'all when you're having a hard time? Ansley, what do you think?
Speaker 1:Huh, huh. How can we make things better?
Speaker 2:Which way did it go, George he's starting to hit you.
Speaker 1:Which way did you go?
Speaker 2:Didn't she have some idea for you to redo a closet, or? A office or something. Yes, and you're going to do it.
Speaker 3:Leave my baby alone. I'm making Sunshine redo Victoria's office.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Maybe paint the wall with you. No, but Victoria doesn't. I don't like painting.
Speaker 2:Yeah, she should know that she's your wife, 25 years you don't know that.
Speaker 1:So suggestions for teens and tweens, yes.
Speaker 3:I have one question Does Victoria like chocolate? She?
Speaker 1:does Not Well, well, she likes question.
Speaker 4:Does Victoria like chocolate? She does Not, well, well.
Speaker 1:She likes chocolate.
Speaker 4:Well.
Speaker 2:That's hers. That Hershey bar is your daughter's Big mouth. Okay, so let's have more of a fun game. I'm going to let you guys do a new version of the ABC game where I'm going to give you each the letter. A new version of the ABC game where I'm going to give you each the letter and you have to either give, you have to give a letter, a word for him and a word for me. Ready, so A what would you give for him? Keep it clean, a fart mouth.
Speaker 1:A fart mouth, wow, thanks, tetzel.
Speaker 2:What would you give? What would you give Michael? What would you give that for A? I was waiting on you to say like annoying.
Speaker 4:Awful. Oh, I haven't thought about that.
Speaker 2:Annoying. Okay, what's my A?
Speaker 1:Say amazing, for me Amazing.
Speaker 2:Aw, what's my A?
Speaker 4:Awesome.
Speaker 2:Aw B Good time A Bula.
Speaker 1:Great.
Speaker 2:What's his B? Sunshine butt, sunshine butt. What's my B? Beautiful Aw, big heart See Sunshine butt, sunshine butt, with my B Beautiful Aww. Big heart, big heart C. You have a bastard C Cotton candy head. Okay, c no, skip you.
Speaker 3:C Courageous.
Speaker 4:C Crazy in love. That's awesome.
Speaker 1:D. Crazy in love, courageous D for don't know. Apparently I'm old and I didn't know about this character named Louie. Yes, until you walked in with that jersey on, I didn't know who he was or what he is. It's a she.
Speaker 3:It's a she. Oh see, do you know, is there a raccoon?
Speaker 1:Does Bluey have a girl?
Speaker 3:sister or a boy brother. What you lost me. Does Bluey have a?
Speaker 1:sister or a brother? How would I know?
Speaker 3:I don't even know what Bluey is. That's a silly show. This is Bluey Is it a raccoon a dog, a cat, it's a dog, it's a dog. A blue healer.
Speaker 4:A blue healer.
Speaker 3:Yep, victoria knows way more than you do.
Speaker 1:Of course she does. She has three doctorates. Yep, do you know what a doctorate is?
Speaker 2:Nope, Do you know what a Michael is? Yes, what's a?
Speaker 3:Michael, a big pain.
Speaker 1:It's a lot there, Tinsel.
Speaker 2:Oh boy.
Speaker 3:Click on me, tinsel Okay.
Speaker 1:Tinsel.
Speaker 2:How can we help teens and tweens when they're going through different things in their life and they need support?
Speaker 3:Maybe not calling them Tensel.
Speaker 1:Okay, fine, kinsley.
Speaker 3:Maybe to give them some space if it's needed.
Speaker 2:How about not hound them so much about a couple of things on the floor of their room. And everybody thinks they through. Obviously yeah. So what can you do?
Speaker 1:What else?
Speaker 4:Huh.
Speaker 1:What else?
Speaker 2:Um what can we do to help? Play music, play music. That's good, that's really good. Yeah, playing music. Drawing oh, can we just talk about her drawing skills? Oh my gosh, you're awesome going on the wall like she's going up on the wall because amazing, she's amazing her drawings are amazing. She tried to teach me how to draw a rose and granted, it kind of looks like a plate of wet noodle spaghetti like in a blender and mix up onto a plate. Because it didn't even look like a rose, it wasn't that bad.
Speaker 2:It wasn't that bad. I can't draw a stick figure, I can't, but her drawings are gorgeous, amazing. She's such a talent and she drew one of. Michael and she did a self-portrait. It looks a lot like the Joker.
Speaker 3:Maybe, maybe the Joker shoe Sunshine the. Joker's you. Sunshine, really, yep Sunshine, that's another.
Speaker 2:Sunshine. I know I love how they have this playful banter together. So what was it you guys said? In the car last night. It was so funny. You said something and we were driving back and she's like tell me about this, sunshine, and oh, my face hurt. It was so funny, this little bit. What are you doing to my daughter?
Speaker 1:I'm trying to keep her from picking my phone. Well, that chalice is on there. They're peeling off From what? From working. I'm a hardworking man.
Speaker 3:That's why Sunshine is not. Sunshine plays video games and takes naps.
Speaker 1:While Victoria works very hard.
Speaker 3:Okay, so I do take a nap and play video games.
Speaker 2:One time at band camp he had five naps in one day. I know Sunshine. So what else can adults do to better help teens and tweens when they are going through different things?
Speaker 3:what bugging us? It's not. It's not helping us. Yeah, maybe, if it's like you keep asking us to empty the dishwasher, we're just like give us a minute, but you keep going and keep going, and keep going, and she's like ah, I asked her earlier what she thinks is a good allowance, and I was so impressed with her answer.
Speaker 3:What did you say? Okay, if you're doing it weekly or monthly, monthly would I'd say $20 a month and maybe five or 10, but I'd say five a week. Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
Speaker 1:I'm old school. I know you do like 50 cents a minute. Wait a minute, I'm old school. I know you do like 50 cents a day. You want me to pay you so that I can take care of you every day, provide a roof over your head, clothes on your back, food on the table, and I'm paying you to do chores in the house. Right, you want to come to my house and do chores after I feed you?
Speaker 4:No, where's?
Speaker 1:Meredith. I don't say stuff.
Speaker 4:Mom was laughing when I put my cover on that thing.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah, she covered it up. Okay, then I have a question. Okay, when you go to work and you work which is not a lot, and you work and you earn your money and you go out to eat but work, what would happen if you just worked for free? You wouldn't have money to go out to eat.
Speaker 1:That's correct.
Speaker 3:Same thing with choice. Oh, she's got a very valid employee.
Speaker 1:What I didn't even understand, that it's child labor law.
Speaker 2:Yep. What else is she going to learn the value of money if you don't teach it to her at this age?
Speaker 1:Okay, wait, my employer doesn't provide me with a roof over my head, unless I go to work. I trade time and my energy for money.
Speaker 3:That's what I do. I trade time and my energy for money to clean.
Speaker 1:And do chores. Oh, so you're going to clean my house?
Speaker 3:No.
Speaker 1:Why not? It's not my house.
Speaker 3:I bought you dinner Because you're doing it as a nice friend.
Speaker 1:Oh, now I'm nice.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'm getting better.
Speaker 3:Nah, nah, I'm just giving you credit on the podcast.
Speaker 1:No, no, no.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:And Stucco's the best, stucco's the best. She couldn't believe my name Stucco's my name Handsome what.
Speaker 3:No, no, bushy, eyebrow man I did not. They are not bushy you look like the guy from cloudy with a chance of meatballs. Like you know, flynn. What's his name's name? I think it was flynn's dad. Yeah, yeah, the huge eyebrows that like cover his eyes, unibrow, yeah.
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 4:You know what you're supposed to have on this. It's both unibrow and find a face that's in a girl Wow.
Speaker 1:Then the app's coming Wow.
Speaker 4:Then if you find it, you also will expect.
Speaker 2:I do have a picture of an address.
Speaker 1:So our faith also was strong. Oh, they were amazing. The pizza.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 1:We had a little pizza party Met some new friends Got a little top action involved.
Speaker 2:Yeah, what happened with that? Talk about that. It's crazy.
Speaker 1:He was crazy. Okay, I just draw.
Speaker 2:Yeah, at a bar there wasn't a bar, it was a pizzeria drunk in public.
Speaker 4:public it was not good.
Speaker 2:So because he keeps interrupting and I apologize, tell us what else. What makes you so happy now, all of a sudden? Why are you she's?
Speaker 1:bony.
Speaker 4:Bony, don't runy.
Speaker 2:You know, some people are very conscious about their weight.
Speaker 1:It wasn't a fat joke.
Speaker 3:It was.
Speaker 1:So what? I weigh 275 pounds down. No, it's pretty big, huh, 275. I stopped drinking beer.
Speaker 4:No, they just said no, you't let yourself go. Yes.
Speaker 2:Faith just said no, you just let yourself go. Yeah, yay, what else, kat? What makes you happy? Knowing that you have what in your toolbox? What in your emotional toolbox do you have? To know that you are ready and always have what you need to make sure that you're safe and happy and there's a wallet and what? What is in your toolbox?
Speaker 1:victoria really definitely not sunshine. How am I a tool for you in your toolbox?
Speaker 3:I can talk to you and trust you with what I say. Who am I to tell it? Who?
Speaker 1:am I a top liver? Yep, well, yeah, I know, I don't have counseling under my belt.
Speaker 4:300 certificates or degrees, oh you'll do all right, Like I know you're one, but I won't.
Speaker 3:She has big talk she has don't know she is.
Speaker 1:She really is. I think you're just saying that for credit on the podcast. I say it everywhere I go. Anybody who listens to this podcast and has personally met me they know I talk about my life and my daughter.
Speaker 2:We also call that yeah, he jogs a lot. He jogs a lot, that was not fake.
Speaker 1:That was fake. No.
Speaker 3:I bent down to grab a sticky note that I dropped and sunshine backed my head. Really, you can't prove that. I think that the wonderful faith and the amazing Victoria saw it happen.
Speaker 4:That's true. I feel like I'm going to love Queen's laughter. I feel like I'm going to love it. I think you need to have her on more.
Speaker 1:She's like a paid advertisement.
Speaker 2:No, I love having her on and I think she would be so great for other teens and tweens to really understand the aspects of how important it is to have a confident, trusted talk to. What about? Stop interrupting her?
Speaker 1:What about the parents just listening?
Speaker 2:But they need to like put their phone down and actually show that they're listening, not pretend. I say parents, not to pretend like uh-huh, I hear you uh-huh, and then two or three minutes later they have no idea what they oh my goodness.
Speaker 3:You're goofy, you are Sunshine. Y'all are just goofballs, serious.
Speaker 2:So Sunshine is supposed to be doing something nice for me and I don't know what it is. And this is between Kinsley and him. I'm a little nervous. And I told her originally, like a month ago ago, not to hold her breath because, I know my husband and she was so cute. She's like I got this on the wall. Does she want to give you a little lecture? That was a great time, yeah.
Speaker 3:First of all, first of all, first of all, sunshine has not gotten Victoria a present for any holiday or their anniversary for five years. Five years, isn't that horrible?
Speaker 1:That's horrible. Who would do such a thing?
Speaker 3:You're shaming yourself.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:But he gets gifts and thoughtful things all the time. He's never run out of anything.
Speaker 3:He ever needs. Victoria got sunshine Like a 90 or what is it, an 80 or 90 inch TV for Christmas, and Victoria got nothing in exchange for that. You remember the last thing that Sunshine bought you?
Speaker 2:He bought me a gun five years ago. A gun. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 3:Did you want it?
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:That's good Five years ago. What the heck? That's horrible.
Speaker 1:How many husbands buy their wife a gun? My dad did, your dad bought Really.
Speaker 3:My mom has like five guns, but they're legal.
Speaker 1:Of course Alright.
Speaker 3:See sunshine.
Speaker 1:Is there a number two? You said first of all.
Speaker 3:Yes, there's more.
Speaker 1:Great. Number two, Sunshine is not very nice to me for you. You just said that to millions of people. Yep, are you?
Speaker 3:serious. Yep Sunshine needs to step his game up. What?
Speaker 1:I can't wait to hear this. How does he need to step his game up? Ahh, I can't wait to hear this.
Speaker 2:How does he need to step his game up?
Speaker 4:Uh, well for Waker which is not very nice. He moans Because I don't mean like he's hurt or anything. I'm just trying to clarify that he left me in that he's a pain in our rear ends, yup and uh, trying to procrastinate when I can do something, I cannot fix this. Right, I cannot find a way to let it move.
Speaker 2:No, he's never hit me.
Speaker 4:I want to clarify that, that's sweet.
Speaker 1:That's a nice way to compliment me, yep.
Speaker 2:He's a pain but so what were you saying, Kinsley? I was saying you were on number two.
Speaker 3:I was on number two. When sunshine doesn't treat you very well, what should he be doing? He should be working more.
Speaker 1:I'm just saying oh, thanks, thanks a lot, kid.
Speaker 4:What.
Speaker 1:Wait, wait, wait. How do you figure I'm lazy.
Speaker 3:How do I figure? I see it.
Speaker 1:What did you see?
Speaker 3:Well, Victoria, she works like 24 hours a day the whole day. She works the whole day while sunshine is playing video games and goofing off, and that's what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2:Yes, that's right and today. You are late for work, yep.
Speaker 3:Because you went back to sleep.
Speaker 4:It worked it worked.
Speaker 3:I mean, you don't get famous by sitting around and playing video games. Well, how?
Speaker 4:are you good at it? I'm not famous anymore.
Speaker 1:So Victoria is famous and I'm not Yep, so if I type in Victoria Curie online will I get a whole bunch of famous stuff.
Speaker 3:Okay.
Speaker 1:Like you think she's on like things like IMBD, mm-hmm.
Speaker 3:You know what IMBD?
Speaker 1:is you think she's on a place like Cameo?
Speaker 3:Probably.
Speaker 1:You think she takes up the first 11 pages of Google? Yeah, what do you think Michael takes up?
Speaker 4:Nothing.
Speaker 1:It's like an itch. It's like an itch.
Speaker 2:Okay, yeah, okay, but yeah yes, yes, I will show on my phone sunshine we're doing very good sunshine.
Speaker 3:the pr are going to get worse if you don't step your game up. Just saying, do you not know?
Speaker 2:what IMDB is. It's any and everything about. Hollywood and whatever.
Speaker 3:So we'll see Are you switching it up yourself? That's you there, I am. Victoria, there I am. Yep, now I'll search up Michael.
Speaker 1:No.
Speaker 2:Ah what's up? Is he on there?
Speaker 1:No.
Speaker 2:No, we'll look in Cameo.
Speaker 3:Okay.
Speaker 1:You have to be famous to be on there.
Speaker 2:Yep, exactly. Okay, hold on, say what's my name again. What's my name again. What's my name again? On what's my name again? What's my name again?
Speaker 4:What's my name again there?
Speaker 2:That's me. Why are you annoying my child?
Speaker 1:I'm doing absolutely nothing over here, Just like you do every day. I'm excited you're home. Nothing over here, just like you do every day.
Speaker 3:I'm excited you're home Victorious.
Speaker 2:Obviously You're being wronged by your public.
Speaker 1:And the public's for you also.
Speaker 2:Oh, no, not again.
Speaker 3:Let me just say Sunshine thinks that the president yes, we had this discussion at dinner. Yeah, Sunshine thinks that the president ruled over the founder and CEO and the CEO yes, they do they don't. They don't. The founder and CEO ruled over the president. The job, the job I hired him.
Speaker 2:I think your annual review is coming up.
Speaker 3:Maybe this company, maybe we should fire him.
Speaker 1:Who's going to take my place? Nobody. You're the heiress Me, you're the heiress to this company.
Speaker 2:I'll hire her. She could be our artistic director. No, she could be the artistic director. She could be the artistic director.
Speaker 3:Are you working for free? I am actually.
Speaker 2:That's good but you see how much work he does yeah, it's so little but again because we've gone way off the lip build and this is so different than our any other unstoppable episodes, because normally we talk very serious about things that are going on in this world and how we can make things better and but anyway, it's so important to be able to know that you have someone there that you know you can always talk to because I was talking about we were talking earlier about how the other night she texted me at 12 50 am and immediately I wrote back are you okay?
Speaker 2:why are you up? What did I say? What?
Speaker 3:did I get? I got like five spaces and then I got why are you still up? And then I got are you?
Speaker 2:okay because I needed to know if she was okay and if she needed me right away, because she needs to know she has someone that is gonna listen and be there for her and have. We have what's called invisible string and all she has to do is like you know, there was not that long ago. She needed me and I just showed up where she was and I sat there with her and that's where she taught me how to draw some roses and and uh, you just know when you're needed, and I love this look well, thanks a lot.
Speaker 1:You know you're rarely Well thanks a lot.
Speaker 3:you know You're rarely.
Speaker 2:So what advice do you give? Give us some advice. Don't go to Sunshine for help. Don't go to Sunshine for help.
Speaker 3:What are his good qualities?
Speaker 2:I'll have to think about that one, let me. Let me think he's already yawning he'd take a nap right now if you let him. Yeah, he fell asleep in the car on the way back. I'll snipe him better I'd say re-cooking.
Speaker 1:I made corn dogs tonight.
Speaker 2:You set the fire alarm off, which was pretty impressive. That's true, he always sets off the fire alarm.
Speaker 4:Oh wow, I usually do Adam Homocon, who got a fire alarm.
Speaker 1:The fire department have come out Only three, four times Four.
Speaker 2:That's horrible.
Speaker 3:That's horrible.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:They waste their time on their nice job on you.
Speaker 1:Cops are here too, on you. Yeah, I forgot the alarm code.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you forgot the alarm code. Then he's sick. Okay, let's look at the good quality of sunshine here.
Speaker 4:Wow.
Speaker 2:He is a good dad. He is a good dad to you, mm-hmm. Well, so what?
Speaker 1:maybe you're taking too long there, hoss.
Speaker 3:I take my time, thank you. Okay, let's see what's the wonderful things about Faith so many. I could go on for better. So Faith, she's also an amazing drawer, drawer, artist, Artist. She's really great and I love how she draws everything. It's just amazing, so cool. And then it's also very nice because we both have that in common. And then what else is nice? She's a great friend and fun to be around. She's very care very cared like if.
Speaker 3:I cough, like every time, like I'll just cause like just say are you okay? That's like really do me. You know that she cares about you. You get that from.
Speaker 1:Me? No, Definitely my side right. Shako, it's from Victoria.
Speaker 2:Shako's, my dog Gloria's.
Speaker 3:Yeah, my dog so sweet, that's gross.
Speaker 1:It's gross.
Speaker 3:It's so in love.
Speaker 2:You've got a dog on the face. You've licked me on my face. Ew, it's gross. I can't stand it. That is like such a pet peeve. He'll come up and just that's what I can't do, oh that's another thing, but in my lecture for you later.
Speaker 3:Thanks a lot there. Tinsel, don't call me.
Speaker 2:Tinsel, he is just. Thank you, what have you got for us there, sunshine?
Speaker 1:Keep up the good work. You're doing awesome.
Speaker 2:You're doing amazing.

Speaker 2:We got facts. I think they're facts, they're facts.
Speaker 3:Are you serious? Do you know the difference? You know the difference, Dennis.
Speaker 1:I don't.
Speaker 3:I'm sure you're going to tell me A fact is, something that is over, completely true and a joke is when you're telling something that's sort of a lie. But to be in a funny way, really yeah.
Speaker 2:He's falling asleep sitting here, yep.
Speaker 1:Okay, I don't do that. Y'all might as well wrap it up.
Speaker 2:Why? Because you're falling asleep, yep.
Speaker 1:The world wants to hear how loud you snore, yep. Uh no.
Speaker 3:Yes, yes, yes, fall asleep. It's so loud in here we do hear it downstairs.
Speaker 1:They've heard a train before.
Speaker 3:It's you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy.
Speaker 3:Stucco is just the sweetest dog Because Victoria trained it.
Speaker 2:Tell everybody, give them five good tips on what to do when they're having a hard time.
Speaker 3:You're not out, sunshine Three, I don't think you can do five.
Speaker 1:I know she can I know she can do six.
Speaker 3:You're not out, Sunshine.
Speaker 1:Three, five, five. I don't think you can do five.
Speaker 2:I know she can. I know she can do six, but I'm only asking for four.
